Do you have a trampoline in the backyard? Your children probably love playing on it, but have you given any thought to their safety on a trampoline? It might seem like a harmless thing, but every year there are hundreds of thousands of accidents with trampolines in the US alone. Why is that the case? Very often it is because the trampoline is used improperly. So, what is proper use of a trampoline? First, never let more than 1 person use it at once. With 2 or more people on the trampoline, the risk of injury increases greatly.

It is also important to install netting around your trampoline. Falling off of the trampoline onto the ground can be fatal. You should also not let anyone jump off of objects onto your trampoline. This could cause them to bounce uncontrollably, or break the trampoline and make them fall through it.

While a trampoline can be very entertaining, it needs to be used with adult supervision.

The ductwork in your home is essential to the operation of your heating and air conditioning system. If the ducts are full of dust and debris it can greatly decrease the amount of air that can move through them, and it can also carry with it particles that lower the air quality in your home. Unfortunately, for a homeowner,  it may be difficult to access these ducts for a cleaning. Often, the ducts will be sealed away inside the walls of your home. While you could try to invest in tools that will let you get to some of the ducts, for a complete, thorough cleaning, a professional company will be your best choice. Usually, these companies will have a high powered vacuum that connects to your network of ducts and they use this in conjunction with tools that dislodge anything that is more stubborn. They can also treat your system to prevent microbe growth and further improve the air quality in your home.

Cement walkways can easily become very dangerous when they start cracking and shifting. Many homeowners are worried about the cost and time that it would require to replace a walkway, so they might choose not to do anything about it. There is however an alternative to replacing it, and that is called mudjacking. Mudjacking is accomplished in such a way that the existing walkway is preserved. First, holes are drilled through the cement, and then a mix of cement, soil, water and other materials is pumped through to level the surface.

While this procedure is much easier and quicker than a replacement, it is not entirely risk free. If this is done improperly it could damage underlying pipes, power lines or gas lines. This is why you should do the research to find a reputable company to do the work for you.

While cracked sidewalks can be unsightly, the danger they present is much more serious. Mudjacking is an easy fix to the problem.

Could you live in a home smaller than 1000 square feet? How about one that is smaller than 100? That is what many have chosen to do since the start of the tiny house movement. In many cases, people will choose to live in a smaller space to have a simpler life, hoping to get more enjoyment out of life with less distractions.

If you are thinking of building your own tiny home, it is important to remember that in many cases there will be very specific codes to be observed to make sure that your home is in compliance, as well as, safe to live in.

Living in a tiny home does have many advantages. Your cost for heating and cooling will decrease significantly, especially if you formerly lived in a large home. You will spend much less time cleaning and repairing your home and your impact on the environment will be lessened.

It might make it more of a challenge to entertain friends, but if you are located in an area where there is nicer weather, you always have the option of entertaining your guests outdoors.

You probably have quite a few electronic devices in your home, some of them very expensive. Maybe you invested in extended warranty to keep it safe, but will your warranty cover it if it is burnt out from a power surge from your power line? In many cases the answer will be no. That is why you should invest in getting a high quality surge protector. Many times they will come with a warranty that covers the devices connected to it, however this warranty might not always be reliable. It might be worth it to research the company that made the surge protector to find out their track record. There should be a light on the protector indicating if it functions properly. Usually they will only be useful for a few surges, so they need to be replaced in time.

For the surge protector to work properly, it needs to be connected to a properly grounded outlet.

Do you have green thumbs and plants all around your home, or do you feel like plants aren’t worth the effort? You might be surprised to know that having plants in your home can be very beneficial for your health. Why is that? Well, we spend a lot of time indoors, and the air inside of our homes is full of chemicals that are harmful. Usually, these are at fairly low levels, but they can still cause respiratory problems, asthma attacks, as well as, headaches.

Having plants will lessen the amount of chemicals found in the air in your home. Plants actually filter out many of these chemicals, providing you with cleaner air inside your home. There are plants that are fairly low maintenance, if you have a hard time keeping plants alive. You should, however, take care not to overwater the plants since leaking water could do damage to your floors. If you add too many plants to your home, the moisture they release could also do damage, but this can be remedied by running a dehumidifier.

Is Your Home Safe For Children? https://calproinspections.com/is-your-home-safe-for-children/ Fri, 30 Nov 2018 21:18:25 +0000 https://calproinspections.com/?p=902 The post Is Your Home Safe For Children? appeared first on Cal-Pro Real Estate Inspections.

How far are you willing to go to protect your child? As a parent, there is nothing you wouldn’t do, I’m sure, but it’s not easy to predict all the situations where your child could get hurt.

Many times, what you need to do is checking that there is nothing unsafe within reach of your child.

If you have stairs leading to a second floor or down into the basement, they should be blocked off by either a door or a child proof gate. Any chemicals that you use for cleaning should be kept inside of locked cabinets or high enough that your child can’t reach it or climb up to access it.

Tools and knives should also be kept out of reach. It might be worth it to invest money into latches to install on drawers and cabinet doors to make them child proof.

Outlets should be either covered or tamper proof.

Even though some of these methods might be inconvenient for you, it is worth it to keep your child safe.

Window Mounted Air Conditioners https://calproinspections.com/window-mounted-air-conditioners/ Sun, 25 Nov 2018 04:01:54 +0000 https://calproinspections.com/?p=898 The post Window Mounted Air Conditioners appeared first on Cal-Pro Real Estate Inspections.

Installing a window air conditioner is not something most of us look forward to, but changing weather might make it necessary. If you want to make sure that your air conditioner is safe, there are a few things to consider about where and how you install it.

Your first step is picking a location. If at all possible, it is always best to have the AC connected directly into a wall outlet. If it is necessary to use an extension cord, you need to get one that is specifically marked for AC use. You also want to avoid having any other appliances on the same circuit.

Your AC should be securely fastened with all the mounting hardware supplied, and it might be necessary to install a bracket to provide support underneath the unit.

To ensure that the unit operates at peak efficiency, proper insulation around the unit is necessary. In addition, this would include keeping the unit out of direct sunlight.

Dryer Exhaust https://calproinspections.com/dryer-exhaust/ Wed, 31 Oct 2018 04:20:38 +0000 https://calproinspections.com/?p=892 The post Dryer Exhaust appeared first on Cal-Pro Real Estate Inspections.

When you run your dryer, do you ever wonder what happens to all that moisture that is in your clothes? You might not, but ensuring that it gets vented out of your home is very important. Why is that? It is because the average load of laundry contains about a gallon of water, and if it is released into the air inside your home, it could cause all kinds of problems when it condensates, such as water damage and mold.

A proper dryer exhaust needs to be vented to the outside, 3 feet or more from anything that might take in air, such as, doors or windows, and at least 10 feet from an air conditioner.

The duct should also be horizontal and with as few bends as possible, since a buildup of lint and dust inside of the duct could lessen the effectiveness of your dryer, or even worse, cause a fire.

What Not To Flush https://calproinspections.com/what-not-to-flush/ Sun, 28 Oct 2018 00:20:21 +0000 https://calproinspections.com/?p=889 The post What Not To Flush appeared first on Cal-Pro Real Estate Inspections.

People will flush the strangest things down the toilet. They might think that is ok since there is a large opening and lots of water flushing it out. In reality, the only things that should go down a toilet are the things it was designed for, waste and toilet paper. Other items might plug your plumbing, and if you have a septic system, certain chemicals can disrupt the function of the system. Let’s consider a few of the more common items that are flushed down a toilet and why it is a bad idea.

Dental floss, even though it is small, can get tangled up and cause a clog.

Cooking grease will coagulate when it hits the cold water and create a sticky, water repellent clog.

Cat litter may be designed to clump up when wet, so this will also cause problems.

Diapers will not break apart like toilet paper does when flushed, and probably won’t even make it past the first bend.
