If you are a parent, you know how hard it is to have your eyes on your child every moment, and how quickly they can get themselves into trouble. Something that children are prone to doing is sticking things into wall outlets. While there are cheap plastic covers that you can use to try to prevent this, if your child is insistent enough, or if you forget to put them back in after using the outlet, these are inadequate.
A better option is to install tamper resistant outlets. They are designed to prevent an item from being inserted into just one of the holes, requiring a double prong contact to be inserted. Inside of the outlet is a spring loaded mechanism that requires pressure on both sides before a shutter will move aside and allow a connection. The shutter then closes automatically as soon as you remove the plug.
Tamper resistant outlets will cost you more than regular outlets, but it will mean one less thing to worry about when it comes to keeping your children safe at home.
